Election 2008: Where does it stand?

So Super-Dee-Duper Tuesday has come and gone and it looks like Obama’s been taking states left and right. So Obama supporters should don their “Barack Rocks!” tees and dance in the street, right?

In the words of AndrĂ© “3-Stacks” Benjamin on his song the Life and Times of Benjamin AndrĂ©, “W-w-well, yes and no.”

If you look at the chart, you see lots of checks in the Obama column, but what the chart doesn’t take into account is the number of electoral votes for each state… You see, some states are “worth more” than others so to speak in terms of the number of Electoral Delegates. What a lot of people don’t realize is that we’re voting for delegates and their pledge to vote for the candidate of our chosing, not directly voting for the candidate. And according to CNN’s election center, Clinton is still up by 93 88 votes. It’s still close and there are plenty of states to go, so it’s anyone’s race at this point. And this is just for the nomination convention! We get to do it all over again in November for the plegdes of the electoral college, who actually do the real voting for the President!

Meanwhile, the GOP side of things is a bit more clear cut. It’s almost certain that the Republican candidate will be McCain. He’s got more than double the votes of Romney (the next closest condender). Poor Ron Paul is down there with a meager 16, so I’m pretty sure the RP supporters will start taking down those stupid ReLOVEution posters soon. I’m getting sick of seeing them…

    Good explanation of the process!

Good insight. But with this weekend’s caucus/primary sweep, Obama has swung into a very small lead (if you include delegates and superdelegates), and leads by more if you take out super-delegates. See here.
Now of course, we have this Tuesday to look at, VA/MD/DC all favor Obama right now in the polls, but we’ll have to check it out.
