Some initial impressions/opinions after listening to the album…

    1. This album is inspired by American Gangster about as much as any of Jay-Z’s albums are inspired by any gangster/mob movie. In fact, it’s more inspired by the Gangster lifestyle.

Having both seen the film and listened to this album in it’s entirety, I’m straining to see a connection beyond a few soundbytes in the intro and a shared title. Well… the track entitled “American Gangster” is kinda reminiscent of the film… but that’s mostly because of the sample chosen.

    2. This does not discount the fact that this is a pretty good album. Of course, it’s not Jay-Z’s best work but it’s certainly not his worst. IMHO this album is of a caliber similar to, but not exactly equal to, that of the Black Album.

There are some gems there though. So this album is definitely worth a listen, though I’m not sure if it’s worth a “buy”. I don’t know if this album was worth Jay coming out of “retirement”.

additionally, it’s kind of annoying how all of the songs end so abruptly. No blending, no fading out. Just slam into the next song, mid syllable sometimes. It’s weird and off putting.

I was thinking for a second that something was wrong with my MP3 player, then that something was wrong with the songs… but it looks like it was purposefully done, for what effect? I’m unaware.
