The discussion on the Brown is typically pretty heavy, so I’ve created a policy of posting something that I think is funny every Friday to lighten the mood. So I give you, Family Guy:
wow. that is wrong on so many levels. Somehow that clip slipped through my Family Guy watching. And you contradict your whole funny friday spill with that deep clip!!!
Okay, I’ll bite. This is why I think that it’s funny:
Family Guy is one of those shows where no one is safe. There’s a running joke that Brian doesn’t like black people… He’s the secret racist that I discussed many articles ago. I this particular clip, the joke is actually on Brian, not on black people.
What is funny about it is not that “black men run out on responsibility” but rather how absurd it is for Brian to think such a thing in the first place. The funny part is Stewie’s ultimate reaction of discomfort and awkwardness with Brian’s accidental display of racism.
If Stewie had high-fived Brian at the end of the joke, then we could get upset. But there’s a different message if you’re not hypersensitive. If anything, the message is that it’s not okay to be an outright bigot in the 21st century.
There’s also the “bad dog” thing that is funny because despite Brian’s walking bipedal, talking and sipping martinis, he’s still the family dog.
